Indonesia

Spanning a chain of more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia stretches nearly the width of the continental United States, yet holds a depth of cultures and landscapes all its own. In the jungles of Borneo, charismatic orangutans swing through dense rainforest canopies, and on Sulawesi, the critically endangered Celebes macaques and tiny nocturnal tarsiers make the forests feel alive with character. The Komodo Islands are as dramatic from above as on the ground, their rugged terrain set against reefs that form brilliant patterns of color when seen from the air. On Bali, terraced rice fields and temples reflect a cultural heritage shaped by Hinduism blended with local traditions and Buddhist influences, while the island itself is dominated by Mount Agung and neighboring volcanoes. Just offshore, Nusa Penida adds sheer cliffs and turquoise bays to the island’s dramatic seascapes. Across the wider archipelago, the Ring of Fire continues with giants like Mount Bromo, Semeru, and Kawah Ijen, where sulfuric fumes rise into shifting light and smoke. Indonesia defies simple description; it is a place where diversity, grandeur, and beauty combine in ways that continue to surprise even those who think they know it well.
